Introduction - What this challenge is about

I love Sydney. It’s where I was born, where I grew up, and my home today.

When most people think about Sydney, they think about our iconic harbour, the great beaches, perhaps the CBD, but Sydney is more than that. Greater Sydney contains around 650 suburbs over 12 000 square kilometres. It’s full of people’s homes, stores, restaurants, offices, factories, parks, schools, universities, and God knows what else. It is home to around 5 million people from just about everywhere on earth.

Can anybody truly say they’ve seen all of it? Certainly not me.

I stumbled across a list of every suburb in Sydney, and I’ve realised that there’s a whole heap of places in this town I’ve never even heard of, let alone visited. That’s why I’m planning to visit, and share at least one photo of, every suburb in this city. That’s what this project will be.

I'll be using suburbs as defined on the NSW government's Geographical Names Register and will follow this great Wikipedia article listing the suburbs of Sydney.

From each suburb, I'll share at least one photo, and give my thoughts. I also won’t use photos from previous visits. I like the idea of starting from zero and picking each and every place off, even though I’ve already been to a good chunk of these places some time in my life.

Part of this project is about trying to find something interesting in every place, and I’m sure for some suburbs that might be a challenge. I have no clue how long this will take, or if I’ll be able to finish, but at the very least, it’s an adventure.

Here we go.

  3. Love this blog Yaz - good work! So much I don't know about my home town - don't need to rush to check it out though - I expect you'll eventually do it for me.

  6. I really enjoyed seeing/listening to you on Sunrise this morning and now look forward to following your trip around Sydney. I had a similar idea a few years back but as I live in Canberra it will take years and years plus I am nowhere near as organised or determined as you seem to be. Good luck.

    1. Thanks Albert! It might not be feasible for you to check out "every" suburb, but I'd encourage you to go exploring anyway! You might find some great spots just around the corner from your house that you never knew existed.

  8. I love this blog. I like getting the email updates and it's always a little thrill to see that the next one is a suburb I've lived or worked in. What a great idea. I hope you keep it up!

  10. Are you still doing your thing? I started doing a similar thing independently in 2019 and have done 29 suburbs so far. The only differences are that I select which suburbs to go to completely randomly using a random number generator and I travel to the suburbs entirely by public transport, using my trusty gold opal card. The results are put on Facebook, in the public group Opaling Sydney. Maybe I'll see you on your trips sometime - I'm the guy with the beard and red backpack.
