Welcome back! If you didn't check out part one, take a look at that first

So this is part two of my four year anniversary special and my attempt to walk across Sydney. This instalment takes me from St Ives in Northern Sydney across 8 suburbs (5 of them new to the blog).

The Suburbs

This video takes me through 8 suburbs, 3 of which I've already covered in the blog:
  • St Ives (previously covered in 2019)
  • Pymble (previously covered in 2019)
  • Turramurra
  • Warrawee
  • Wahroonga (previously covered in 2021)
  • Thornleigh
  • Pennant Hills
  • West Pennant Hills

My thoughts on all this (spoilers below)

So as you'll see in the video, I didn't make it, tapping out after the first day.

Am I disappointed? Kind of.

Will I reattempt this? Not any time soon (but you're welcome to try and go for the glory).

Best part of the day? Taking a couple of days off work to be alone with my thoughts, as well as discovering that new (to me) bushwalk through Garigal National Park.

Worst part? The amount of cars I had to walk alongside (you'll see this a lot in part two), especially with the number of main and pedestrian unfriendly roads I found myself walking on.

Anyway, thank you for watching and for your support through these four years. By the end of this video, my count is 433 suburbs. The spreadsheet I keep says that there are 676 suburbs, which means that I'm two thirds of the way there - hooray.

I'll be back on Thursday for our regular scheduled programming.

Hello and happy August.

It's a bit of a tradition for this blog that I do something a little bit special for August - the blog's anniversary month. Well, this year I figured I give walking all the way across Sydney a crack, and make a video of the attempt.

Episode one is below and involves me walking across 5 (new) Northern Beaches suburbs. And yes, I am counting these as visits for the purposes of the blog - I need to get through these, people.

The Route

The overall challenge involves attempting to walk all the way across Sydney in a roughly straight route, which for me is the ocean at Dee Why Beach to the end of Penrith Council at Emu Heights

It crosses the Northern Beaches, through to the Northern and Northwest Suburbs and then across vast Western Sydney to reach the end goal.

Part one takes me through:

  • Dee Why
  • Narraweena
  • Beacon Hill
  • Frenchs Forest
  • Belrose
  • (and into St Ives)

We're up to the final people's choice suburb. Tying with North Rocks for equal gold, like those Olympic high jumpers, we say hello to this often-requested Sutherland Shire beachside suburb.

So far, we've seen your equal fifth and equal third most wanted suburbs. Now we're at the pointy end - this is second place. Actually, that's a lie, this one is equal first. That's right, literally every result of the poll was a tie.

Anyway, congratulations to

North Rocks

You all seemed to enjoy equal-third place Barangaroo. As such, I am thrilled to give you equal-third place Epping.

As a suburb, Epping's one I actually know pretty well, having grown up in the general area. As a result, I have no idea why people wanted me to come here. Let's see if visiting this place with a new outlook will change my view.

Finally, we're done with the suburbs that you all voted into equal-fifth. That means this next suburb had the fourth most votes right? Well, no, it was equal third due to my poorly thought out polling.

Still, I always enjoy an urban walk, so thank you for sending me to

Barangaroo

Hello. We finally reach the final of the equal fifth suburbs that folks wanted me to visit. Of all the ones so far, this is definitely the most obscure. Here's Sutherland Shire's own

In the words of the wise philosophers of the yesteryear, The Backstreet Boys, "oh my god, we're back again".

I hope you made it to the other side of the latest instalment of this apocalypse in good spirits and good health. Now, cast your mind back to June, when I promised for this blog's 3rd Anniversary Special to spend a month going to the eight suburbs that you, the reader, most wanted to see.

In eighth place (well - equal fifth - it turns out that when you do a poll with 300 options for a blog that gets a few hundred readers on a good day you get a lot of ties), you voted me onto a bus to the Inner West.

This August, Completing Sydney turns 3 years old. To celebrate, I put my life in the hands of my faithful readers, and where I go in August 2021 will be determined entirely by your votes. There are 8 posts which are scheduled to go up in August, and I will go to the 8 suburbs that have the most votes.

The poll will close on 30 June. This is to give me time to go to these places over July, but I can also pretend it's for tax purposes.

Visit this Google Form to vote.

The Form requires a Google Account to vote so that you can only vote once. There's probably a really easy way to get around the restriction, so I'll just ask nicely - please don't? Sorry if the Google Account requirement means that it's hard for you to put a vote in.

Hello!

It's August again. That means that it's now the second anniverary of this blog. Since I quite enjoyed my last attempt at making some video content, here's me giving it another whirl.

Blacktown. The Best Daytrip from Sydney?

A friend of mine recently shared with me an incredible video from the late nineties. It's a video which aims to sell the city of Blacktown to travellers visiting Sydney, making the lofty claim that Blacktown is the best day trip out of Sydney. You can watch the original video on Blacktown Memories: https://blacktownmemories.recollect.net.au/nodes/view/749.

While other day trips out of Sydney include the picturesque Blue Mountains, perfect beaches to our city's north and south, and even Australia's capital, these folks are clearly confident that Blacktown's got something special to offer. As a blog which celebrates Sydney's underdogs, what better way to celebrate my 2 year anniversary than to see if Blacktown's marketing department's claims hold up in 2020.

Suburbs Featured:

Blacktown

Blacktown is the "capital suburb" of Blacktown. In the video the only location mentioned in Blacktown itself is Blacktown Workers Club

My full write up of the suburb of Blacktown went up on the 9th of August 2020: https://www.sydneycompletion.com/2020/08/western-heart-blacktown.html

Doonside

In Doonside, two of Blacktown city's best attractions, Nurragingy Reserve and Featherdale Wildlife Park, were featured in the video.

My full write up of the suburb of Doonside went up on the 16th of August 2020: https://www.sydneycompletion.com/2020/08/bonnie-doonside.html

Bungaribee

Bungaribee is home to the new Sydney Zoo (presumably named so to confuse tourists into buying tickets online, thinking they're going to Taronga), as well as some of the Western Sydney Parklands.

My full write up of the suburb of Bungaribee went up on the 23rd of August 2020: https://www.sydneycompletion.com/2020/08/outdoorsy-bungarribee.html

Glenwood

Parklea Markets are actually in Glenwood, and not Parklea. I also filmed the "temple scene" outside of the beautiful Gurdwara Sahib Glenwood

My full write up of the suburb of Glenwood went up on the 30th of August 2020: https://www.sydneycompletion.com/2020/08/good-marketing-glenwood.html

Rooty Hill

In Rooty Hill, the video took us to Rooty Hill RSL, Blacktown International Sportspark, and, of course, Rooty Hill... Hill

I've already covered Rooty Hill on this blog, you can check out the post here: https://www.sydneycompletion.com/2020/04/youre-rootyful-rooty-hill.html

Prospect

Prospect actually featured a fair number of attractions in the video. We've got the lovely Prospect Reservoir, Raging Waters, and the Drive-in Cinema, as well as the horse

I've already covered Prospect on this blog, you can check out the post here: https://www.sydneycompletion.com/2020/03/all-rights-reservoired-prospect.html

Eastern Creek

Finally, in Eastern Creek, I checked out Wonderland and Sydney Motorsport Park (formerly known as Eastern Creek Raceway).

I was meant to take some pictures on my visit, but I got carried away with the filming and forgot. whoops. Here's a photo from the suburb so I can consider it "completed" because really, we've seen everything there is to see in Eastern Creek.

Thanks for dropping by.

If you're not already, you may want to consider subscribing to this blog via email, Facebook or Instagram to see the companion posts to the video as they come up over the next few weeks.

Welcome. This is the final stop of my two week celebration of the head-scratcher that is the Carlingford Train Line. It doesn't take a spectacular brain to deduce that the final stop on the line is Carlingford. This is another one of those big and wide suburbs, so I don't cover everything here, but hopefully I've given it it's best.

Welcome to the first instalment of my 1 year anniversary special miniseries. For this, we're dialling the mediocrity up to eleven with the first of many completely forgettable Carlingford Line suburbs.

Ladies and gentlemen, August marks a milestone for this blog and challenge. It's the one year anniversary of Completing Sydney!

To celebrate one year of mediocrity, I thought I'd dig into Sydney's most mediocre train line - the Carlingford Line.
